I just tried the web browser in Onyx Boox and it was excellent (in my view)
The Arabic text in the browser is great, it is very clear, and the letters are connected. As for searching in Arabic, there is no Arabic keyboard BUT if the website has an arabic keyboard in it, such as google search, then you can use that arabic keyboard. when I went to Arabic google search, I clicked on the keyboard icon in the search box and typed my search words with it, and it worked well, alhamduilllah. I am going to try to take some pictures, and maybe videos (if possible) showing this insha Allah. Another feature is the Glyph embolden: Adjust the display contrast of PDF/ePub, from level 1 to level 5, the contrast will be more and more dark. So far I only tried it in Arabic text pd, and it works , it makes the words look like they are bolded,, the best level in my opinion is level 2, or at least for the book I tested. |

I honestly dont understand why people give relevance to e-readers in light of the post iPad age. with just $0-200 bucks more than you would pay on the kindle fire or any other e-reader, you can connect yourself with a brand new iPad 3, the display of which revolutionaizes screen technology 5 years ahead of itself and a processing power that is unrivaled. If anyone is looking for "e-readers", the ipad maximizes the e-reading experience both in visuals (the new state of the art screen resolution which I urge anyone to research on), processing power, and does not neutralize your experience to e reading because it is almost an actual computer. However, to be fair, the only criticism that could come about, the only worthy criticism that is, in favor of the e-ink is the issue of the lcd screen producing glare in sun light whereas the e-ink makes it able to read in sunlight due to reflective technology. So it would depend if you conbsider yourself a person who reads in the sun alot and for some hours, by which case reading in the e-ink may be more better, or if your a person who would not really read in the sunlight anyway but would read in a place like starbuck or in your home, or some building. Usually people who are outside are doing stuff, and not actually "reading", and if they are, they are usually reading in the shade. So even with this advantage of the e-ink over the ipad, I don't see the practicality of it at the expence of giving up the multi functional purposes that the ipad can bring to you, just for the sake of trying to be able to read in sunlight. You get what you pay for, so if you spend 50, or 100, or 200 more for an ipad, you will get what you pay for. Morever, the literally hundreds of applications available for e-reading on the apple market adds to the luxury, intensity, and sophistication of reading due to the rich content of the cocoa programming language. Im speaking from experience as i have a tablet and my wife has an ipad 2. Lastly, The storage on these other devices suck because they usually come with 2,4, or 8 gigs of built in sd along with expandable storage only up to 16 or 32 gigs whereas the ipad comes from 16, 32, and up to 64 gigs. So you can put the entire maktaba shameela on there if you wanted to and have room for other islamic videos, content, media, photos, photo editing, running servers. There is a galaxy of things you can do on the ipad. at any rate, inshallah you will make the right decision without regrets asalamu alaykum

E-ink devices don't use up much power, thus you can use it for at least a week (sometimes up to two or even 3 weeks in some readers from what I read) before needing to recharge it, contrary to LCD which need recharging every 8 to 10 hours of usage. I need an e-reader for reading, I do not need to buy a tablet that cost 500 to 600 dollars with so many features which I do not need. Also, tablets are a distraction like pcs are, while e-ink readers are limited in features, and cannot be used for videos, or most games (except for simple ones such as sudoku), nor messenger, and it is not practical for typing posts in forums, ..etc., since typing with an on-screen keyboard is very slow. Thus one would not be distracted with such stuff. That is why I chose an E-ink reader over a tablet. |

Nagwan, kindle 3 (and possibly kindle touch [only available in the USA]) support Arabic with connected letters (on pdfs and web). The sad thing is there is no text reflow on pdfs. The disadvantage is that the screen is 6 inches, slightly difficult for reading scanned pdfs. Kindle DX has a big screen but has kindle 2 software, so you can't read arabic on it unless you hack it and install a unicode hack. The kindle 3 is above average (for a 6inch ereader) and is okay for books and basic text web browsing.

Kindle 3 doesnt have a notepad, and the typing on it is really slow and difficult (not recommended). Its best for reading books only yet.
