Has anyone done a review of the Aisha Bewley's Translation "THE NOBLE QUR'AN - A New Rendering of its Meaning in English" ?
Does it contain any modernistic interpretations ? [Harun Yahya quotes from this translation in his works] Does it contain any Sufi leanings ? [considering the Sufi background of the translator] I myself have never read this work.

She is indeed a ashari and a sufi. She has many works of ibn Arabi on her website. She considers many false sufi scholars as great. You can read a portion of her Quranic translation on her website. Compare it with others. See it for yourself. |

I highly recommend the translation yes. Having read several translations, it is by far the most accurate to the Arabic and the easiest to read, backed up with an excellent grasp of both Arabic and English. It is fair to say that Aisha Bewley is one of the most prolific and important Arabic to English translator there has ever been, her list of translations is like a list of must-have books (e.g. Qur'an, Al-Muwatta, Ash Shifa, Ibn Taymiyya's book of the soundness of the Medina school, etc)! The fact that she has also translated parts of the Qurtubi tafsir and the entire Jalalayn tafsir confirms her excellence as a translator of the Qur'an. The youtube link above is a good link. As far as I know she translates entirely literally. i.e. she translates Face as Face and not as Essence, and Hand as Hand and not as Power, or some other interpretation.

I have read a very tiny portion of her translation and didn't find it to be all that great.
I don't have any idea how much of her Sufism or Ash'arism she managed to inject in the translation, but given that she was not giving commentary, I would expect that it would be limited. Her translation is based on the Qira'ah of Warsh, which would slightly change the meaning of some verses. A very interesting idea in my view; however, I did not find it - from the small part that I read - to be impressive. Given her fame as a translator, I would have expected better. There is a translation by MAS Abdel Haleem, which is brilliantly done and an excellent read, but the author is an extreme modernist heretic and he manages to inject his modernism in the translation from time to time. |
