Assalaamu aleykum, this is in Sahih Bukhari:
Narrated 'Abdullah: I or somebody, asked Allah's Apostle "Which is the biggest sin in the Sight of Allah?" He said, "That you set up a rival (in worship) to Allah though He Alone created you." I asked, "What is next?" He said, "Then, that you kill your son, being afraid that he may share your meals with you." I asked, "What is next?" He said, "That you commit illegal sexual intercourse with the wife of your neighbor." Then the following Verse was revealed to confirm the statement of Allah's Apostle: "Those who invoke not with Allah, any other god, nor kill life as Allah has forbidden except for just cause, nor commit illegal sexual intercourse." (25.68) Book #60, Hadith #284 As it says, this ayat was revealed in response to a specific situation when Abdullah ibn Masoud radiAllahu anhu asked about the greatest sin. However, in the Qur'an this ayat has been placed in such a way that it makes it appear as if it was not revealed singularly, but as a part of a continuous thought. 25:63-70 : And the servants of ((Allah)) Most Gracious are those who walk on the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them, they say, "Peace!"; Those who spend the night in adoration of their Lord prostrate and standing; Those who say, "Our Lord! avert from us the Wrath of Hell, for its Wrath is indeed an affliction grievous,- "Evil indeed is it as an abode, and as a place to rest in"; Those who, when they spend, are not extravagant and not niggardly, but hold a just (balance) between those (extremes); Those who invoke not, with Allah, any other god, nor slay such life as Allah has made sacred except for just cause, nor commit fornication; - and any that does this (not only) meets punishment. (But) the Penalty on the Day of Judgment will be doubled to him, and he will dwell therein in ignominy,- Unless he repents, believes, and works righteous deeds, for Allah will change the evil of such persons into good, and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful, So, this verse was revealed for a very specific incident, but in the Qur'an it flows with the preceding and following verses in a way that makes it appear as if it could have been revealed with multiple verses at the same time. Is this correct? It was revealed singularly and then Allah told the Prophet sallallahu 'alayhi wa salaam where it should be put? Are there other ayats like this that appear to be part of a continuous context, but were in fact revealed independent of them, but ordered to appear so? JazakAllah khair. |
